THE CHILDREN’S SOCIETY THIS CHRISTMAS AT ST MARY’S
The Children’s Society, previously the Church of England Children’s Society, helps vulnerable children of all faiths and no faith including those at risk on the streets, young refugees, disabled, young carers and those within the youth justice system. St Mary’s has been supporting the charity for many years with individual collecting boxes and donations from carol singing. For the past three years we have also held a Christingle service in December and last year, for the first time, we had Christmas cards on display for people to order.
There are four ways in which you can support the Children’s Society: “The 4 C’s”: Collecting boxes, Christmas Cards, Christingle and Carol Singing.
Individual collecting boxes can be supplied for adults or children in which you can put loose change. Counter top ones can also be supplied for your place of work. Please ask me for one.
Many of St Mary’s congregation and friends ordered Christmas Cards in 2014 and we will be doing this again this year. The display will be up from the end of October. All proceeds from the sale of these cards will help make a difference to the lives of vulnerable children. I have been assured delays in delivery that affected a few people last year will not happen again.
On Sunday 13th December at 4pm we will hold our Christingle service. Christingle, meaning ‘Christ’s light’ is a service for children where we remember Jesus came into the world to bring light and hope. As well as nurturing children’s faith, Christingle is important in raising vital funds to support work of The Children’s Society. Today, over three and a half million children live in poverty in the UK and by 2020 it is estimated there will be over four million. All the money raised from Christingle services across the country goes towards making a difference to the lives of these children and young people. The Children’s Society believes that no child should have their life devastated by poverty.
On Wednesday 16th December, at 8.45pm we will be Carol Singing round pubs and restaurants in Battersea Square and High Street.
The money we collect will be donated to the Children’s Society. All are welcome to join in singing and/or collecting. We meet at church at the end of choir practice. Carol sheets are provided. We advise warm clothes as we may be outside part of the time. We will finish with a drink or two in the Woodman.
Thank you all for your support! Libby Bradshaw, Children’s Society Co-ordinator, St Mary’s
