Temptation

Can you define temptation? Not many can, but we all know when we’re going through it.

Can you define temptation? Not many can, but we all know when we’re going through it. Temptation: an act of enticement to do something wrong. Yielding to the enticement may result. We either yield, which is failure, or resist, which means the person has defeated the Tempter (Satan). It all depends on the the power the individual has.

Temptation makes us aware of Satan’s presence. We have our power by being prepared, reading the word of God, watching out and always praying. Remember the Lord’s encounter with Satan in Matthew 4:1-11. In verse 9, when Satan promised to give all things to Jesus if he would worship Satan, Jesus replied,”Get out of here, Satan, for the scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God; serve him only.'”

Satan comes through common things in our lives: an enticement could be in the form of drinking too much, making fun in a wrong way, or lusting for money, to name but a few. We all know our temptations. There’s no day that passes without an encounter with the devil. Just think back to what you went through even today. We all have gone through trials and temptations at home, in our work places and with family and friends – the list goes on! With all these, how did we make it? Only God knows. It hasn’t been easy, but I say “Well done!” It’s a battle that will continue until we are called to answer our Maker.

If the Son of God can be tempted, how much more ourselves. Recognise that you can’t do this yourself, but that the Spirit of God will guide your spirit. Let us be aware of what Satan is doing, and ask God’s Spirit to help us. Remember it says in Psalm 119:11 “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” We must adjust our lives to get the Spirit of God to encounter Satan for us.

One area for temptation is prejudice. Learn to treat all people how God treats them: with kindness no matter who or what they are. We’re all children of God, all created equally by the God who created heaven and earth. We all have the same blood, we all sleep and wake, eat meals. Some people are sleeping when others are awake, some are having lunch when others are having supper. God did not make some higher than others, but he said that everything He made was good.

We should blame nobody for what is happening to us. God is watching us, so we should stop tempting one another and live with God in our minds always. Remember, God is the God of Justice. He is mysterious. Although life can be a struggle, everybody has a right to acceptable living. God hates it when we try to terminate each other’s life or comfort.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, resist the devil and he’ll go. The Power of God is your resource. Be at peace with one another and let’s sort out our problems amicably. We should submit ourselves to God on a daily basis.

May God bless us all in our attempts to live well.
Amen.
