Open Church

Libby Bradshaw explains how you can help keep St. Mary’s open for visitors

St Mary’s has a rich history and is situated on the Thames path with many passers by. Many people are pleased when they find St Mary’s open as they like to visit the church for its history and/or find a place of quiet. Usually the church is only open when there are services but, provided we have enough volunteers, we will be keeping the church open on Sunday afternoons throughout the summer between 1pm and 5pm.

Can you help? You do not need to have knowledge of the history of the church; you are there to make people feel welcome. There is an information sheet with a tour of the church which can be offered to visitors. Some may want the areas shown to them and others like to walk round on their own. There are also Guide books (£2), postcards (30p) and mugs (£4) available for sale.

Sometimes visitors want to sit quietly on their own and some may want to talk. It may be helpful to point out the intercessions book. Some people may want to know the times of services and any special events so copies of the current newsletter and notices are also available.

From July 26th – September 6th we will be having our summer recital series at 3pm on Sundays. The concerts are free with a retiring collection towards the music of the church. Volunteers will welcome people to the concerts and provide tea and coffee afterwards. Open Church will then continue until 5pm as usual.

Would you like to enable people to come to look round St Mary’s or just have some peace and quiet for their own thoughts and prayers? If so please sign up to shifts from 1-3pm or 3-5pm at the back of church.
