Change is in the air for Battersea Deanery Synod.

Change is in the air for Battersea Deanery Synod.

It has a new Archdeacon, the Rev’d Canon John Kiddle. His previous appointment was as Director of Mission Diocese in St Albans Diocese and a Residentiary Canon of St Albans Cathedral. He lives in the Battersea Deanery area in Battersea Park Road. He has very kindly agreed to come to the next meeting of the Battersea Deanery Synod to be held at St Mary’s Church on 13th October 2016 and, indeed, to address us.

St Mary’s Church, Battersea is part of 9 parishes with 9 Benefices and 13 churches that make up Battersea Deanery. It falls within the Wandsworth Archdeaconry of the Kingston Episcopal area within the diocese of Southwark. Southwark embraces diversity and this is certainly true of the churches that make up the Deanery representing all the different strands that make up our Anglican Communion. Also, the Rev’d Geoffrey Owen who has served as our Area Dean for many years is retiring from his position as Area Dean with effect from 1st September 2016 and his successor will be appointed in due course. All the churches in the Deanery expressed sadness at his departure and thanked him for his outstanding work in the Deanery.

We will all miss his wise guidance but he has promised to be an enthusiastic supporter of the continued work of the Battersea Deanery Synod. He will be familiar to many members of all the churches as the Director and Producer of the Deanery pantomime held each year at the Church of Christ Church and St Stephen in January. The next pantomime is Aladdin and a meeting for all interested parties will be held at Christ Church on Friday 15th July 2016 at 7pm.   Please attend if you are interested as stage hands, lighting assistants are very much needed as well as aspiring actors. It is great fun.

It was a sad moment for our friends at St Luke’s in May when the Rev’d Elizabeth retired. She will be much missed, not only by her parishioners but by all the churches in the Deanery to whom she always lent her support.

Finally, there is a vacancy in the St Mary’s Battersea members on the Battersea Deanery. That vacancy was not filled at St Mary’s Annual Church Meeting in April 2016: Debbie Apostolides, Emma Belak, Carol Brindle and Leslie Spatt are the present members but it would be so much better if we were up to full strength.

If anyone is interested, please speak to the Rev’d Canon Simon Butler or Debbie Apostolides. It does matter.
