Memorials

We lost two wonderful members of St Mary’s in December and there will be a chance to remember each of them in special services this month.

Winifred Stone was a member of our church for a number of years. She had worked for much of her career for the Children’s Society (formerly the Church of England Children’s Society). Winifred was a quiet, prayerful presence in St Mary’s, a member of the Third Order of St Francis, a passionate supporter of the ordination of women and a great friend and support to Charlotte Kirwan. Winifred’s Requiem Eucharist, which will be conducted by Third Order Franciscan clergy friends, is being held at St Mary’s at 1.00pm on Monday 16th January. You are very welcome to attend.

Kate Bishop saw St Mary’s as her main family for over a generation. Feisty, highly-intelligent and articulate about her faith, her politics, her church and her doubts, she was a true character, who loved music and was a great supporter of St Mary’s Choir (she was one of the donors of our new choir robes). Kate has been wonderfully supported by Carol Brindle, Alison Watson (a former member of St Mary’s) and many others over the years, and has managed to keep going until a significant decline in the few weeks before her death on 28th November. Kate left her body to medical science and so there is no formal funeral at this stage. However, there is to be a special, musical Memorial Service at St Mary’s on Saturday 21st January. It will be followed by afternoon tea. The preacher will be Revd. Peter Wintgens.
