It is my pleasure to invite you to the Lancelot Andrewes Festival 2015 at the Cathedral on Saturday, 26th September. Our theme for this year’s festival is ‘How great a man is here’, words taken from his tomb in the South Quire Aisle.
There is a Festival Eucharist with the Bishops of Southwark and Ely at 12 noon; special themed tours with devotions at the tomb throughout the afternoon; the Lancelot Lecture given by the Revd Dr Nicholas Cranfield, and a Festival Choral Evensong at 4:00 pm.
Andrewes (1555–1626) was a wise bishop, a great man of learning and a person of deep spirituality, and we keep the Saturday nearest to his commemoration day as a special celebration at the Cathedral where he is buried. It is a celebration not only for the Cathedral, but also for the whole Diocese of Southwark, and indeed for the wider Church. He has much to teach the Church today and by keeping this Festival, we celebrate his legacy to us all.
Lunch and Afternoon Tea will be available in the Refectory, with a 10% discount for all purchases for those attending the Festival. The Churchyard and a room in the Millennium Buildings will be available for those who would prefer to bring a packed lunch.
