Bell Tower News

News from St Mary’s friendly and welcoming bell ringers – do come along if you’d like to have a go.

Following the annual Meeting of the Northern District, the committee has remained unchanged for 2016. This will allow a degree of continuity, and consolidation of features introduced last year.

The programme for the year is pretty much set. Continuity comes with running events around the third Saturday of the month. By doing this we hope to fix the idea in people’s calendars that there will be ringing on somewhere that weekend so keep it free!

The focus of the general monthly ringing events will be ringing for all. We will cater for the ability for all who attend (within reason!!). Ringing at other towers is a very good way of improving, never worry about coming along. Our February meet at Richmond saw 25 in the tower, a bit of a squish, but appreciated by the local ringers who said that it was heart-warming to hear all 8 rung all evening.

We will also continue with the monthly surprise major practices at Carshalton on the third Friday 7.30pm. Regular attendance at this is a great way to build up your knowledge and understanding of ringing the standard 8 surprise methods. If you are just starting out on the Cambridge road do come along. Thank you to Shirley for coordinating and running these.

Consolidation and building are also themes for the year. We have booked sessions for the under 18s group up until the beginning of April. I would like to thank Chris Stanley for his help in running these. By building up the confidence and ringing ability of this group, it is hoped that they will encourage others to join. We hope to get a team to join in a youth striking competition to be held on April 2nd run by the Guildford Guild.

Croydon Minster are running 12 bell practices on the first Tuesday of the month. The practice starts at 8pm. There will be opportunity to ring Grandsire and Stedman. You are welcome to go and build on any 12 bell experience you have, or start to dip your toe in the 12 bell water. We will also continue slightly more advanced 12 bell ringing practices once a month ringing Stedman and Surprise Maximus. If you are interested in these contact a member of the committee for dates and times.

March sees a general ringing session in the morning! On March 19th we will visit both Fulham and Putney, then go for lunch. See website for times.

The only other event I would like to promote here is the District outing to be held on 18th June. We will be going to St. Albans. As it turns out it is the day of the St. Albans’s pilgrimage, so it will be a very busy and lively day. We have 3 of the 4 towers booked, and I think we are lucky to be allowed to ring on such a prestigious day for the town. As it will be so busy, we will try and book a pub for lunch but ask for a small deposit to estimate numbers. Watch Yahoo and the website for details.

Do come along to events which are both educational and social!
