Losing a loved is one life's biggest challenges. At St Mary's we seek to respond in a number of ways to any local resident or church member who experiences such a loss.
Our clergy make it a priority to conduct a funeral service for those who live in our parish or who have a historic link with St Mary’s or North Battersea. In the first place, please contact the Vicar (or, during the vacancy, the Parish Office). We will happily assist anyone encountering bereavement and can advise about some of the practicalities.
Experience shows it is often best to speak to us before discussing arrangements with a funeral director, especially if you would like one of our clergy to conduct the service and definitely if you would like the service to take place in church. The clergy are always happy to conduct funerals in St Mary’s or, if you prefer, at a local crematorium or cemetery.
Memorial Services can be arranged by discussing your request with the Vicar. These can happen either immediately following a private funeral service or a short period afterwards. Please note: if you or your family originate from elsewhere in the world, we are very happy to consider accommodating particular cultural or local funeral customs with grieving families.
Because the church building is extensively used during the week, funeral and memorial service can usually only be held at or after 1pm.

We make a point of praying every day for the bereaved and the departed. You are welcome to add your departed loved one’s name to our prayer book in church.
Many people find it helpful to come to church around the time of a loss, even if they are not regular church goers. You are most welcome to join us at any service.

and in whose arms we die,
in our grief and shock
contain and comfort us;
embrace us with your love,
give us hope in our confusion
and grace to let go into new life;
