Sacred Heart Battersea was first built in 1875 as a temporary Iron Chapel. Today it is a vibrant parish within the Archdiocese of Southwark, guided by the Salesians of Don Bosco. Located in the heart of a diverse community, the parish extends its warm welcome to all, covering an area from Clapham Junction station to the River Thames, and surrounded by Plough Road and Culvert Road. Led by Fr. Peter Pagac SDB as Parish Priest, alongside Fr. Anthony Lobo SDB as Assistant Priest, and Deacon Michael Kennedy, the parish cultivates a strong sense of spiritual connection and community. The three religious communities within the Parish are the Salesians of Don Bosco, the Salesian Sisters, and the Society of St. Paul. Their mission focuses on service, education, and spiritual growth. The Parish’s two Catholic schools, Sacred Heart Primary School and St. John Bosco help shape the faith and future of young minds. With its deep commitment to inclusivity, faith, and service, Sacred Heart Parish Battersea is a beacon of hope within the community. Today, Sacred Heart Parish Battersea continues to embody its founding principles, fostering a welcoming environment for worship, education, and community engagement, guided by the Salesian ethos of caring for the young and the marginalized.
Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s Church have a long history of collaboration. Despite being separate entities, they come together for various events throughout the year, fostering a sense of community. Notable collective activities include the Good Friday service, where both churches unite in prayer and reflection, and the children’s procession, which warmly welcomes families and children, as well as the Knitting Club the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. They also hold a joint Advent service, during the Christmas season. Having worked together on numerous events at different times of the year, they have created a tradition of partnership that spans many years. This ongoing association reflects their shared commitment to serving and strengthening the local community. The connection between these two churches exemplifies the power of collaboration in faith and community building.
