St Mary’s is celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen in style on Sunday 5th June! First, we have a Platinum Jubilee Service: Gracious God, we give…
Gracious God, we give you thanks
for the reign of your servant Elizabeth our Queen,
and for the example of loving and faithful service
which she has shown among us.
Help us to follow her example of dedication
and to commit our lives to you and to one another,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
At 11am there will be a special Service of Thanksgiving for the Jubilee at which the people of Battersea can give thanks to God for 70 years of godly and dutiful service to the nation that our Sovereign has given us. St Mary’s Choir will sing Hubert Parry’s coronation anthem I was glad and the beautiful Tudor anthem O Lord, make thy servant Elizabeth by William Byrd. The preacher will be Mr Sven Tester, a long-standing member of St Mary’s who sang in the Coronation in 1952 as one of the Scholars of Westminster School. The service will be completely free and will last an hour.
St Mary’s congregation have invited two groups of special guests to join us for a churchyard outdoor Big Jubilee Lunch to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee and to bring people together across the diversity of our neighbourhood. This will be part of the Eden Project’s Big Lunch vision, which seeks to gather people together across local areas in a shared meal to encourage and deepen friendships and links between different groups. St Mary’s has invited two special groups to join us – local Elders, some of whom will have lived their whole lives, from perhaps before the coronation, in the Elizabethan age, and some of whom will remember the Coronation itself. The other group, equally special, will be newly-arrived communities: refugee families who have made Britain their home, and who use the local Love to Learn Project based at the Katherine Low Settlement.
Representing Britain at its best and the Church’s inclusive vision, we will have a special sit-down party lunch in the churchyard, with music, party food, fizz (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), tea, scones, strawberries and cream, special Bunting Biscuits and cake, all accompanied by some live music and special crown-making activities for children. There will even be an organ recital in the church during the afternoon.
If you are an Elder, please book your place via the Katherine Low Settlement Elders Project ([email protected]); if you are part of the Love to Learn Project at KLS please book via Elaine ([email protected]); if you are a member of St Mary’s Church please book via Harry ([email protected]). Family and extended family groups are welcome to attend. You must have booked by Friday 27th May to allow for catering arrangements to be made.
The party begins with fizz immediately after the Jubilee Service at 12.15pm and runs through the afternoon until 4pm. Dress code is party clothes: red, white and blue are encouraged!
