St Mary’s Battersea (Battersea Parish Church) is a Church of England Parish Church in the Diocese of Southwark. We are committed to our vision: Growing Together With God.
We are a medium-sized church. We have a membership of around 200 adults and 30 children.
We aren’t a party church – some would call us ‘middle-of-the-road’ – but we are a diverse church in terms of ethnicity, social and economic background, age, sexuality, politics. Whatever their background, everyone is welcome.
We have a strong musical tradition and a long history of serving this neighbourhood. We have strong links with Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, the Katherine Low Settlement and Thomas’s Battersea.
We are a historic church. St Mary’s Church – in one shape or another – has stood here on the bank of the Thames since 800AD. Today’s Grade 1 Listed Building – recently extensively refurbished for the 21st century – was completed in 1777.
We try to be church by being:
a community of Christ’s disciples, faithful and enquiring;
a community of love, hospitable and nurturing;
and a community of difference, inclusive and transforming.
What does that mean in practice? It means that when you come through our doors we aim to give you a warm welcome. We welcome you as we believe Jesus Christ would. And, because we dare to believe that you might meet him alive and among us, it means that we pray that when you leave, you might be changed by him working through us.
It also means that we rejoice in the diversity of our backgrounds and insights. Jesus Christ calls all sorts of people to follow him: saints and sinners is what the bible calls us – and that means both things at the same time! By exploring faith together, we hope that God reveals more of himself to us as we listen faithfully to the Bible and to one another.
And it means we are a church with a mission – or, more accurately, we are a mission – God’s mission to love us back to him. We encourage everyone to share what they have to play their part in the work of the Kingdom of God in Battersea.
