Growing in Faith

Courses and Groups

One of the best ways of belonging to a church and exploring the Christian faith is by taking part in one of our small groups or short courses. At St Mary's we run a number of small groups and occasional courses. You can find out more by registering for the weekly newsletter or contacting the Parish Office

Exploring Christian Faith: Alpha

Alpha is an international phenomenon and literally millions have completed this course which is a basic introduction to Christianity, based around a simple evening meal, a short talk and a group discussion. You can find more details at www.alpha.org. We run the Alpha Course in a questioning and inclusive way, in the spirit of our Vision. Please contact the Vicar for details of the next Alpha Course.

Study Groups

We currently one regular bible study group in operation, meeting on a Thursday afternoon, focussed on exploring life and faith together, through bible study, discussion, reading a book together and the support that comes through what Christians call ‘fellowship’, the mutual encouragement of walking together with Jesus Christ in community. We have occasional groups studying aspects of our faith and walk with God. These often take place in the seasons of Advent and Lent, and often with our sister church of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, with whom we enjoy a warm relationship. Please contact the Parish Office for details.

First Communion

At St Mary’s we admit children to the sacrament of Holy Communion from the age of seven. We tend to run a course once a year, with admission taking place at one of the major Christian festivals. If you or your child would like to discuss admission to Holy Communion, please contact the Parish Office.

Confirmation

Because we admit children to Holy Communion, we tend to encourage children to wait until well into their teenage years before exploring Confirmation. At the same time, we often find there are adults who join St Mary’s who want to take an adult step of Christian allegiance and commitment, often following an Alpha Course. We tend to run a Confirmation Course annually, depending on the take up. Please contact the Parish Office.

Lent Courses and Lectures

Lent is always an important time at St Mary’s and we take the 40 days to take up some special task or area of study together. We often have a Lent Course, running in small groups (often with our Roman Catholic friends), and our Sunday evening services are often replaced with a six-week course of study or exploration, often with visiting speakers. Look out on the newsletter for more details of what is coming up in Lent.

Spiritual Direction or 1-2-1 Conversations

The clergy are always delighted to spend time with anyone who would like to talk about their walk with God, how to live the Christian life more effectively, any doubts or burdens you carry. Feel free to contact them directly or ask after a church service.
