We will be celebrating the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III in some style on Sunday 7th May. We encourage you to come dressed for a Coronation throughout the day. All our events are free, although please register for the Kids’ Workshop below.
Coronation Eucharist, Kids’ Coronation Workshop & Fizz (11am to 12.45pm)
At 11 am there will be a special Coronation Parish Eucharist, during which (and separately) there will be a special Coronation Kids’ Workshop in the Crypt, with activities, games, and a special gift for all children who take part. Coronation Kids’ Workshop details can be found by clicking this link, including how to register. You can also register using the QR code below:
After the service, at 12.15pm we will gather in the churchyard for a glass of fizz, the church bells will ring, there will be a children’s coronation parade and we will sing the National Anthem.
Coronation Big Lunch (12.45pm to about 3.15pm)
At about 12.45pm we will then have our Coronation Big Lunch. This is a bring-your-own picnic and enjoy the company of family and friends. We have some tables available, which we will reserve for those who find it had to sit on the ground, and for friends from Katherine Low Settlement, so please feel free to bring your own picnic furniture or blankets. St Mary’s is providing free teas and coffees, a cash bar and live music courtesy of the Hugo Jennings Trio. This is a very informal event. There will be Coronation gifts for all children and for anyone who was alive when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953. There will be a raffle with some special prizes, with all proceeds going to The Prince’s Trust. We are hoping to have a special visitor during the afternoon. There will also be a chance to have your photo taken with the new King!
If you would like to bring a special cake for others to share in, we are encouraging you to make one of the cakes on the download below:
Coronation Choral Evensong (4pm)
The day will conclude with our central Coronation Service, a traditional service of Choral Evensong sung by St Mary’s Choir. It will last an hour and will include familiar hymns, coronation readings and a special Guest Preacher. Reverend Dr. Stuart Hoke, a retired priest from The Episcopal Church (USA), our sister Anglican Church, is in London for the weekend. Stuart is familiar to folk at St Mary’s after leading a memorable Holy Week for us some years ago, as he reflected on his ministry on and around 9/11 in New York City, where he served a church right underneath the Twin Towers. He is a fine preacher.
