Saturday 20th September 2014.
It was a beautiful calm morning down by the river next to St Mary’s at 8:45 in the morning! St Mary’s was looking serine and majestic as the clouds rolled in behind her bell tower. The water was lapping against the house boats and the odd early morning jogger was enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the river path… The morning of the fair.
Within the space of a few minutes this peaceful setting was a hive of activity as tables were brought out, stalls set up, banners hung, games moved and re moved, gazebos and cakes unpacked, kettles boiled, bouncy castle blown up, the BBQ fired up (not literally) raffle tickets folded, books and books and books brought out of the church and set up alongside the bottle tombola, charity stands and brick a brac and collectables.
Simon opened the fair at 12pm to a crown of excited ladies who had eagerly been waiting to be let in and unleashed on the gifts and home produce stalls. The bells rang out on the hour and the church was filled with the amazing voices of St Mary’s and Westbridge choir, there were pancakes to toss and tours to take, faces were painted and a lot of youngsters had a good old bounce on the bouncy castle. The parish dogs enjoyed having a chance to meet and run around and the weather held. Just!!
The fire brigade arrived and let everyone have a go trying on their kit and blasting water down the slip way. Mr Wippy even parked up and gave out ice creams, while James and the crew did a stirling job on the BBQ. All in all it was a marvellous day and all rounded off with a very competitive raffle due to the generosity of so many local businesses.
There are too many people to thank as everyone worked so hard to put on a fabulous fair but particular thanks must go to all those charities and businesses who supported it and to the group of volunteers who worked so hard in the run up to the fair organising the raffle prizes and stalls and those who helped on Friday night and Saturday morning setting up.
The fair was all about inviting the community into our beautiful church and enjoying a day of laughter and fun together. Friendships were forged and many memories made. Well done to everyone! I hope you all enjoyed it and many thanks to you all for being a part of it.
Here are a few photos of the day to remind you of the fun of the fair!
