286 people to Open Church on Sunday afternoons so far!
A Big thank you to all those who have helped keep the church open on Sunday afternoons during the past few weeks. We have had 23 different people helping for the 32 hours we have been open so far (1-5pm for 8 weeks). We have had 286 visitors, an average of almost 9 per hour. We are keeping a record of numbers, any interesting enquiries, weather conditions and so on.
Up till and including Sunday 12th July the afternoons were lively with Joseph rehearsals going on and hopefully this helped the publicity for that production as we gave out plenty of leaflets. It did not allow for the element of ‘quiet’ some people come into the church for (!) but still some were able to come and sit in a pew if they wanted a time to reflect.
Summer Recital Series
The next few weeks, July 26th – September 6th, see the Summer Recital series at 3pm on Sundays. The concerts are free with a retiring collection towards the music of the church. Volunteers will welcome people to the concerts and provide tea and coffee afterwards. Open Church will then continue until 5pm as usual.
London Open House weekend
On Saturday 19th September and Sunday 20th September it is London Open House weekend and St Mary’s is one of the places listed. The Saturday is the day of St Mary’s fair and Sven Tester will have his display of historical information and documents and has kindly agreed to be the key person for this on both the Saturday and the Sunday. We need people specifically to help with this and a signing up list will be at the back of church.
We are still looking for people to help, please.
Would you like to enable people to come to look round St Mary’s or just have some peace and quiet for their own thoughts and prayers? If so please sign up to shifts from 1-3pm or 3-5pm at the back of church.
You do not need to have knowledge of the history of the church; you are there to make people feel welcome. There is an information sheet with a tour of the church which can be offered to visitors. Some may want the areas shown to them and others like to walk round on their own.
Sometimes visitors want to sit quietly and some may want to talk. It may be helpful to point out the intercessions book. There is also a sheet with the times of services available in case anyone asks about these. Copies of the current newsletter and notices are also available.
