THE CHILDREN’S SOCIETY THIS AUTUMN AT ST MARY’S
The Children’s Society is a national charity helping vulnerable children of all faiths and no faith at all including those at risk on the streets, young refugees, disabled, young carers and those within the youth justice system.
Last year the Society concentrated on five core thematic areas: young people affected by child sexual exploitation, mental and emotional health, going missing, substance misuse, and young people who are affected by issues related to being in care or transitioning out of care.
St Mary’s has been supporting the charity for many years with individual collecting boxes and donations from carol singing. For the past four years we have also held a Christingle service in December and for the past two years we have had Christmas cards on display for people to order.
Here are our plans for this Autumn:
Christmas Cards and Advent Calendars:
This year the display of cards for ordering will go up in mid-October on the table near the lift. In addition we will have a stall at the Advent Fair on Sunday 27th November when we will have Christmas cards, Advent Candles, Cards and Calendars. All proceeds from the sale of these items will make a difference to the lives of vulnerable children.
On Sunday 11th December at 4pm we will hold our Christingle service. Christingle, meaning ‘Christ’s light’ is a service for children where we remember Jesus came into the world to bring light and hope. As well as nurturing children’s faith, Christingle is important in raising vital funds to support work of The Children’s Society. Special collecting boxes will be available. Today, over three and a half million children live in poverty in the UK and by 2020 it is estimated there will be over four million. The Children’s Society believes that no child should have their life devastated by poverty.
On Wednesday 21st December, at 8.45pm we will be Carol Singing round restaurants and pubs in Battersea Square and the High Street.
The money we collect will be donated to the Children’s Society. All are welcome to join in singing and/or collecting. We meet at church at the end of choir practice. Carol sheets are provided. We advise warm clothes as we may be outside part of the time. We will finish with a drink or two, probably in the Woodman.
Collecting boxes – all year round:
Finally, individual boxes can be supplied for adults or children to collect loose change. Counter top ones can also be supplied for your school, college or place of work. Please ask me for one.
