Advent and Christmas study Book

reflection by Debbie Apostolides

I thoroughly enjoyed the five week Advent and Christmas study book ‘What the future brings,’ which was available from church in November.  Based loosely around an Advent or Christmas song each week there was a focused reading and a commentary each day from students, recent graduates and those connected with St John’s College Nottingham.

As a daily focus for prayer and reflection I found the book very useful.  I had to be quite disciplined in the first week to make time for it but as Advent and Christmas progressed I found myself increasingly interested and often read back to a previous day’s reading. Some of the readings meant more to me than others but those from Isaiah – unsurprisingly – touched me the most, especially this from chapter 12: ‘See God has come to save me. I will trust in him and not be afraid.  The Lord God is my strength and my song; he has given me victory.’

When I am sad or feeling less hopeful I hope to be able to call upon these words for comfort.  I thoroughly recommend this book to you and although advent and Christmas have passed the readings and reflections are still very valuable.
