Tyrone and I are writing to you with some news.
I am delighted to say that Tyrone has been appointed Director of Music at Grace Church, Newark, New Jersey, in the United States of America. The announcement is being made today at Grace Church by the Rector, Revd. Dr. J. Brent Bates.
The appointment is subject to the successful granting of a United States Visa and it is therefore not yet certain in terms of the timescale. We will keep you informed, including arrangements for St Mary’s farewell to him.
Tyrone arrived as Director of Music in March 2012, having earlier been the Organ Scholar here. During his tremendously successful tenure, we have seen some excellent and encouraging developments. The standard of choral singing has improved, and alongside the attention given to the mainstream Anglican choral repertoire, none of us will forget the fantastic concerts he has arranged and the energy and commitment he has put in and got back from us; we have seen the successful introduction of Choral Scholarships, fully funded for each year by Tyrone, securing a solid base platform for our wonderful volunteer choir; and we have seen a vast range of stunning music-making outside of worship: recitals, concerts, and special services and events. We are hugely indebted to him and we wish him well as he prepares to embark on an exciting new chapter in his life and work.
Tyrone writes, “It has been the greatest of pleasures to work at St. Mary’s as Director of Music over the last five and a half years. I have met the most wonderful people and had some of the greatest experiences here.
I am extremely proud of everything the Choir of St. Mary’s has accomplished. Their efforts and achievements will not be forgotten and I hope to hear of continued success in the ensuing years. From their ‘Sunday by Sunday’ contributions in worship to our excellent evenings of music making in concerts such as the Mozart and Fauré Requiems, they have proved themselves to be the most amazing bunch of singers. I owe my thanks also to the scholars we have had over the years who have proved a valuable asset to the music at the church. I am also extremely grateful to Simon, our Vicar, who has been an excellent colleague and friend during my tenure helping me to progress and develop as a church musician. I wish to thank each and every member of St. Mary’s for all their compliments, support, sponsorship, and commitment to the music at the church.
Though my departure date is not yet set, (visa approval pending, etc.!), I already know I will miss Battersea very much; from the spectacular church building to saying ‘hello’ as I pass some of you in the street. St. Mary’s is an incredibly special place so shout about it to everyone! I know I will be doing the same across the Atlantic! I wish all at St. Mary’s the happiest of years to come. Please do keep in touch: [email protected].
Although this is not the time to focus too much on the future, I would like you to know that it is my intention to conduct auditions and interviews before Christmas with a view to having a new Director of Music in post by Easter.
