Parish Boundaries: Is St Mary's my parish church?

Parish boundariesNot everyone in Battersea is a parishioner of St Mary's (any more). Roughly, the parish boundaries stretch from the intersection of York Road and Lombard Road (where Halford's and Oddbins are) in the West, cutting north-easterly to the north side of Shuttleworth Road, along Yelverton and Gwynne Roads. At the eastern end of Shuttleworth Road, a little pocket is formed by the north side of Prince of Wales Drive, before the parish boundary rejoins the North side of Battersea Park Road, and stretches as far as Beechmore Road. Battersea Park is also in the parish. If you live within the blue line of the map then St Mary's is your local parish church.

Baptisms: Can I get my baby baptised at St Mary's?

We are very pleased to conduct the baptism (christening) of any baby belonging to parents living within the parish boundaries (see above ) or on the Electoral Roll of the parish. See the Baptism page for more information.

Can I be baptised at St Mary's?

Of course you can!  Many adults are now baptised and confirmed each year.  Please come along to a service and speak to one of the clergy. Take a look at our Christian Faith pages for details about courses and to read up on Christianity.

Weddings: Can I get married at St Mary's?

By law, we may only marry people who live within the parish, or are on our electoral roll .  If you fall into one of those categories, your first step is to come along to church on the third Monday of any month between 6.30pm and 8pm to speak with the vicar.  If you would like to be married at St Mary's but do not live in the parish, and are not on the electoral roll, you can arrange to meet the vicar and discuss the various options with him.  Most likely we will ask you to make a regular commitment to St. Mary's, and take a real decision to join our worshipping community. Three or four couple are doing this at any given time, so you won't be alone! Click here for further details about getting married at St Mary's and about Civil Partnerships.
People often renew your marriage vows at St Mary's. If you would like to do this, please contact the vicar well in advance.

The Electoral Roll: What is it, and should I be on it?

The Electoral Roll is a list of all the full members of St Mary's.  To join it is a mark of full belonging, an assertion of your right to membership and an agreement to take responsibility for the life of the parish community.  It is an important thing. It is not the same thing as the local government electoral roll, with which it is sometimes confused.   Membership of the Electoral Roll is open to everyone who is over 16, has been baptised and either lives within the parish boundaries or who has worshipped regularly in the church for at least six months.  If you would like to join, please either telephone Sunny in the parish office (020 7228 9648)

The Parish Administrator: When is Sunny in the office?

Sunny Walker-Kier, the Parish Administrator, is in the office on Mondays to Fridays from  9.00 am till 1.00 pm.  Sunny deals with all bookings for the church and crypt, and general enquiries about Baptisms, Weddings, and other uses of the church.  She also handles banns enquiries, and initial requests for searching the archives or group tours of the church, and is the person that many people will need to speak to first.  The office telephone number is 020 7228 9648.

Archive Searches: Will you spend hours searching through your dusty archives to find details of my long lost ancestors?

No.  Most of our record prior to 1975 have been sent to the Records Office and you need to contact them.
We can supply Baptism and Wedding duplicate certificates since that date, but there is a charge for this service.

Hiring the Church: Can I book the church crypt for parties?

We allow some children's parties to take place in the crypt, but we tend to limit it to people who already use the church in some other capacity and are known to us. We do not normally allow other parties in the crypt, although it may be possible to arrange for refreshments after a church funeral or wedding.  Please contact Sunny, the Parish Administrator for more information.  020 7228 9648.
